| Noorse uitstraling - Scandinavian look |
First Poulsbo, a small town of Scandinavian origin, first Norwegian, later mixed with German and Dutch immigrants. The common language was Norwegian, but turned into English as in the second world war a shipyard was established, labourers were employed and more houses were built. It is now a resort with much space for quays and little parks. Main Street looks a little tiny and tourist. There are small churches, often Lutheran. We buy buns for lunch at Dutch bakery Sluis and enjoy a Danish Apple strudel.
Port Gamble ligt

| New England Style |
Port Gamble is not far away. It has been founded near a bay and a canal by entrepreneurs from New England. They came by ship all the way around the continent. They soon understood much timber would be needed for building houses and factories. They had people coming over from their region in Maine for logging, sawing and trade. One established a sawing mill and founded a company for trade and industry. They built New England style houses for the workers, to give them a home feeling against homesickness. Their town was long “unincorporated” and belonged to the company. In the years of 1960 the mill was closed and the village became a “historical landmark”. We walk Main Street to the harbour, admiring the gentle houses with gardens and fences, often occupied by tourist shops. Near the harbour there is a department store and a museum at once. Port Gamble has a very different atmosphere from Poulsbo.

From here we head for Port Townsend at three quarters of an hour driving. It is situated directly at the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the main ship route from Puget Sound to the Ocean, and across the Canadian Victoria. The city was founded in 1851 for its landing facilities and therefore became “City of Dreams”. The harbour would grow and become the most important of the West Coast because the trade of fur, beaver skins, timber an lately gold and silver. A post office, a police department, several banks, two theatres, hotels, villas and apartment buildings were built in short time, many in Victorian style. The city was scheduled for a railway connection around 1880, but a recession caused a downward economy and thus the railway was cancelled.

The city was troubled severely by this long time economic downturn but in the end could stay afloat, and a modern film festival. Now the city looks bright and nostalgic with the rust brown colour of brick fronts with many painted commercials and Victorian palaces. We take lunch in a retro looking restaurant, looking at the Rose Theatre. A band from San Francisco is playing at the harbour front, the musicians and their families have arrived on their bike, which means a respectable distance of about 1000 miles!

Leaving town I look in vain for a cap with American flag for my grandson, at a gas station. The Japanese owner offers me a few Navy caps instead, they are leftovers and I get them for free. It does not matter here, as long as it stands for patriotism. My grandson will love it. Since World War II the in this area with basis and yards. Later we pass by a huge battleship.

de New
This day in a “waterland” shows us the diversity of people who settled in this “promised land” or land of their dreams. The Scandinavians could feel home between woods, lakes, bays and continue a living of forestry and logging, agriculture and fishing. The New Englanders founded companies for livelihood and copied their home way of living. They found a country almost like theirs. The townsmen of Port Townsend felt attracted by trade and the promises of a future traffic node. They may have had in mind a New York City at the West Coast. With all these prospective we witness three variants of the Oregon Trail. Thousands and thousands heard the call of a new perspective and promise of a better life.
