Een reis naar Pacific North West USA 5-15 juli 2016
A trip to the Pacific North West

De aanleiding voor deze blog is een ontmoeting met Mike en Ed, twee oude vrienden die mijn reisgenoot Fred en ik in 1971 hebben ontmoet op  Notre Dame University in de staat Indiana. We bleven elkaar volgen, per brief, e-mail en Skype en we ontmoetten elkaar ook af en toe. Dit jaar deed zich een gelegenheid voor elkaar opnieuw te ontmoeten in de Portland in de staat Oregon, de huidige woonplaats van Ed en zijn vrouw Helen,  en Seattle in de staat Washington waar Mike intussen is gaan wonen.




The reason for this blog is a get together with old friends, Mike and Ed, whom my travel companion Fred and I  met first in 1971 at the University of Notre Dame in the state of Indiana. We kept in touch over the years by letters and e-mail, and once in a while we saw each other. Last year an occasion for another meeting appeared after all of us got retired. Ed and his wife Helen moved to Portland in the state of Oregon, while Mike took root again in Seattle, the city of his youth and family.

Deze ontmoeting is feitelijk geen thema in deze blog. Door een cursus over “Chicago en de American Dream”  en het lezen van Geert Mak’s “Reizen zonder John” ben ik geïnteresseerd geraakt in het Noordwesten van de VS en met name de ontdekking van en de trek naar het Westen, zoals die  zich aanvankelijk vooral concentreerde in de Oregon Trail. Daarmee is de eerste en belangrijkste route aangeduid waarlangs de vroegere pioniers naar het Westen trokken, voordat ook andere routes werden opengelegd.

Actually this encounter is not subject of this blog. In the last years I  took a course on the American Dream and I read Geert Mak’s In America, based on Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck (1960). This arose my interest in the discovery and  trek to the North West, as concentrated in the Oregon Trail, being the first and most important passage of the early pioneers to the West.

Het volgen van dit spoor vormt de leidraad voor dit fotografisch verhaal. Historische en geografische notities worden afgewisseld met beschrijvingen en afbeeldingen van natuur en stadsschoon. Dit is het meest markant in de hoofdstukken die betrekking hebben op de staat Oregon, en minder scherp met beterekking tot de staat Washington. Uiteraard maakten we keuzes  wat betreft het aantal plaatsen dat we kunnen bezoeken. We bedsteedden immers ook tijd voor bijpraten en herinneringen.

Following this trail is the subject of this photographic story together with historic and geographic notes,  and a description of scenery and towns, especially in Chapter 1-7. The number of places to visit were limited in time and submitted by the need of meeting and talking with friends

Aanvulling 2017
In September 2017 bracht ik om persoonlijke redenen opnieuw een bezoek aan Portland en Seattle. Dat heeft met name geleid tot een extra hoofdstuk 13 -epiloog- met foto's over plekken die in 2016 niet aan bod gekomen waren. Aan hoofdstuk 7 heb ik enkele foto's toegevoegd. Verder is een korte paragraaf opgenomen in hoofdstuk 1 met enkele foto's over landindeling. 

Additions 2017
I visited Portland and Seattle again in September 2017 for personal reasons. Consequently, a chapter 13 is added about places leftover from the year before. I also added pictures of Portland in chapter 7. And there is a new paragraph in chapter 1  about the survey of the land in the Northwest.
